Selecting Homes for the Von Cey Puppies

People who live within a reasonable driving distance are welcome to stop by our kennel and meet the mother(s) of the litter. We do not own our own stud dogs as we are very pleased to be able to purchase stud services of wonderful males near our facility.

Nowadays communicating with interested clients about the health, temperament and behaviors of each pup is very efficient. It it important to represent yourself as clearly as possible in order to find a puppy that will be a good fit for your situation.

We ask that if you are interested in contacting us regarding an upcoming litter that you write a brief letter of introduction including information about work schedules, yard/fence (how the dog will live with your family- indoors or strictly outdoors), children, other animals, anticipated training opportunities, lifetime commitment to this dog, willing to spay/neuter and any previous experience with the GSD breed. The more information you provide the better chance of "matching" a pup to your family or work circumstances.

Matching the Pup to the Home

When making decisions regarding the placement of each pup we take many things into consideration. The above information is most helpful along with a constant watchful eye on the development of the litter throughout each week of development. By 6 - 7 weeks we have a very good appraisal of each pup's attributes and what circumstance would best allow him/her to continue to thrive. Lastly, we administer puppy aptitude tests (usually the Volhard). This is a test to identify general personality traits regarding sociability, dominance and obedience. These steps are taken to promote satification for both the client and the dog - which although it doesn't eliminate all possibility of an error, it does help to lessen the possibility. Now within this structure, the client is allowed limited selection. There may only be 2 puppies that meet the families requirements - or they may be choosing from 4 or 5. Coming to the kennel and selecting the puppy that shows the most interest in you on that day is not a good basis for selection.

Reserving Puppies

Puppies are usually available once (or twice) a year. We begin by creating a "waiting list" of people who have written the introductory letter expressing an interest in acquiring a pup from the upcoming litter.

Once pregnancy is confirmed, we re-contact those on the list to let you know. There is no obligation at this point, however if things have changed for you and you no longer are interested in a Von Cey puppy this is a good time to let us know.

Then once the litter is on the ground we contact you seeking a commitment. At this point, a commitment is required in the form of a non-refundable deposit. The remainder owing will be required before shipping, or just days before picking up your pup. Throughout this process we enjoy answering any questions that prospective clients may have regarding the purchase of a Von Cey puppy.

Preparing for your Puppy

The best way you can prepare for a new puppy is to consider/learn/prepare for the following things:

  • research the postives and negatives of the GSD breed/gender
  • read a variety of articles/videos on puppy care and behavior
  • observe others at a puppy training course
  • research local training clubs/ possibilities
  • locate a reputable veterinarian
  • determine how the puppy will best be cared for: feed/exercise (keeping consistency in mind)
  • crate training for puppies

PUPPY COAT COLORS

Von Cey Puppies will be black and red, solid black or sable. By previewing the "progeny" link off of the home page, you can view a variety of coat colors from our kennel. We do not think this is one of the most important attributes to consider of the GSD. However, whenever possible if everything else "matches" the coat color is also considered.

Getting Your Puppy

Here is a list of items to have on hand when you bring your new puppy home.

  • it is often a good idea to have your puppy arrive when there is someone who can be at home with him/her for at least several days. This is a high stress time for a puppy.
  • food and water bowls
  • collar/leash
  • grooming tools (wire slicker brush, undercoat rake, comb, nail trimmers)
  • safe puppy toys
  • deodorizers/cleaners
  • pooper scooper
  • crate (if using a large one, block the far end off to avoid the puppy eliminating in one end and sleeping in the other).
  • dog bed
  • high quality food (lower protein after 5 - 6 months to avoid hip/elbow problems)
  • paper towel/cloths for trip home
  • it is recommended that you take your puppy to your vet within 72 hours to check him/her over. You will also need to discuss a vaccination schedule with your vet. There is currently a great deal of controversy on the benefits/risks of vaccinations.

Shipping by air is available.
